On the 100th day since Kenya's first coronavirus case was registered, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe issued a stern warning to bar owners who continue to flout curfew rules aimed at slowing down the spread of Covid-19.
Speaking at a press briefing in Nairobi on Sunday, Kagwe emphasized the importance of adhering to the government's guidelines, particularly in the context of the ongoing English Premier League matches.
“People are still operating bars and the government has said that should not happen. Don’t open these bars. Please. If we find you, you will be in big trouble. We will arrest you and permanently revoke your licence. You will have to think of something else you will use that building for,” warned Kagwe.
According to a spot-check by Nairobi News on Saturday, several bars were found to be operating illegally in Nairobi West and Langata suburbs.
Kagwe also expressed confidence in the country's healthcare system, stating that it is capable of handling the surging coronavirus cases, which are nearing the 5000 mark.
Reflecting on the past 100 days, Kagwe acknowledged the challenges and successes Kenya has faced since the first case was registered.
“I was barely two weeks in office when that lady arrived in the country from the USA and was tested positive,” recalls Kagwe.
He commended the media for their efforts in educating the public on the virus, stating that it has been an interesting learning experience for the country.
