On June 21, 2020, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe issued a stern warning to Kenyans against attending political gatherings in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to the nation, Kagwe emphasized that the virus was infecting everyone, regardless of their political affiliations, and that there was a need to avoid gatherings to prevent the spread of the disease.

He urged Kenyans to remember that if they contracted the virus while attending a political meeting, they would be left alone to suffer, as the politicians who called them to the gathering would not be there to sympathize with them.

"No matter who calls you for a gathering, do not go. Eventually, when you are unwell, and in the hospital and your family is suffering, I guarantee you that whoever had called you will not be with you," Kagwe said.

He also warned football fanatics to observe containment measures while watching matches in social places, reminding them to maintain social distancing and wear masks.

These warnings came two days after Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang'ula's visit to his home county turned chaotic, with armed police officers lobbing teargas canisters to disperse supporters who turned out in large numbers to welcome him.
