June 21, 2020 - Kenya has witnessed a notable rise in COVID-19 recoveries, with 21 patients discharged from various health facilities across the country. This brings the total number of recoveries to 1,607.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced the discharge of 600 asymptomatic patients to start home-based care treatment, further boosting the country's recovery numbers.

“By now, it is evident, like any other disease, the coronavirus will be with us for a long time and it will, in all probabilities eventually stretch our medical system just as it has globally, even in the wealthiest of nations,” Kagwe said.

On Sunday, the country recorded 260 new COVID-19 cases, the largest number of infections on a single day, pushing the total number of infections to 4,738 since the first case was confirmed in March.

“The more we test, the more cases we get,” said Kagwe, “we had 260 positive cases confirmed in the past 24 hours.”

Following recent financial allocations from the National Government, the government has enhanced its testing capacity, distribution of free masks to vulnerable communities, and contact tracing mechanisms to combat the virus.

Director-General of Public Health Patrick Amoth praised the government's home-based treatment program, saying it has been remarkable and urged caregivers to strictly observe protocols issued by public health officials.
