On June 20, 2020, residents of Kirinyaga County woke up to find anti-Waiguru leaflets that had been circulated on Saturday night by unknown people.

The leaflets, written in Kikuyu and bearing the message 'Waiguru must go,' were dropped at various locations including Ngurubani, Makutano, Kagio, Kerugoya, Kagumo, Kibingoti, Kibirigwi, and several Mwea rice growing villages.

Residents expressed mixed reactions to the leaflets, with some viewing them as outdated propaganda. 'We don't know who is the author, but we suspect it is propaganda on Waiguru's impeachment,' said John Njamba from Makutano.

Investigations into the matter are underway, according to Kirinyaga county commissioner Jim Njoka.

The circulation of the leaflets comes against the backdrop of an impeachment motion filed by Kirinyaga County MCAs against Governor Waiguru, who is accused of abuse of office and illegal award of tenders.

On June 9, 2020, 23 out of 33 Kirinyaga Members of County Assembly (MCAs) supported the motion to remove Governor Waiguru from office on the grounds of gross misconduct.
