On June 20, 2020, Kakamega County in partnership with Afya Halisi launched a toll-free helpline for health-related issues.
The helpline, accessible by dialing 0800-720-573, will enable patients to communicate with health service providers in real-time, including ambulance services.
Speaking during the launch at the County Referral Hospital, Rachael Akumu, the county Health Services Executive, expressed concern over the drastic reduction in patients visiting health facilities since the first COVID-19 case was reported in the country.
Akumu attributed the decline to residents' fear of contracting the disease, leading to a rise in maternal and neonatal deaths due to failure to seek skilled health services.
She emphasized the importance of the helpline, stating that it will assist expectant mothers even during night curfew hours by directly linking them to the nearest health facility and ambulance services in case of an emergency.
The county administration is keen on reproductive health issues, including family planning and immunization services, as well as assisting victims of Gender-Based Violence.
Francis Kadiri, an Afya Halisi representative, stated that the USAID-funded organization will continue partnering with the county to cover the needs of residents in the health sector.
