On June 21, 2020, detectives from the DCI in Busle area of Mandera town arrested two suspects, Ali Ibrahim Ali and his accomplice, with 26 stones of bhang following a tip-off from members of the public.

The bhang, valued at Ksh. 800,000, is believed to have originated from Moyale and was being transported to other major towns in the region.

Mandera East Sub County Police Commander Richard Ngetich attributed the rising crime activities in the town to the use of illicit drugs and called on religious leaders to advise the youth against abusing them.

North Eastern Regional Commissioner Nicodemus Ndalana expressed concern over the high rate of bhang consumption in the town, stating that the drug was even being fed to donkeys to interfere with their normal way of life.

Ndalana also warned that the proceeds of the bhang business were being used to finance the operations of the al-Shabaab terror group against Kenya's security forces and citizens.
