On a day when Gor Mahia was struggling to stay afloat financially, Amani National Congress politician Eliud Owalo offered a lifeline to the Kenyan football giants. The politician hosted Gor Mahia officials, players, and the technical bench for a luncheon at Sarova Panafric Hotel in Nairobi on Saturday.

Published on June 21, 2020, Owalo's gesture was a timely intervention, as the club was facing a tough time due to the coronavirus pandemic. The politician gifted the team Sh250,000 to cushion them during this challenging period.

Speaking at the event, Owalo emphasized the need for Gor Mahia to be self-reliant and financially sustainable. He cited the examples of top clubs in Africa and Europe, saying that if they could do it, Gor Mahia could equally do it.

“Moving forward, I submit that we must deploy a business-model in management of the club to make the club financially viable and sustainable. If Arsenal can do it, Gor can equally do it. If Barcelona can do it, why not Gor Mahia?” he posed.

Despite the club's financial struggles, Gor Mahia players have not been paid for the last five months. However, the club received a new lease of life last Thursday after securing Sh55 million sponsorship with international betting firm, Betsafe.

Acting captain Joachim Oluoch, who spoke on behalf of the players, thanked Owalo for his kind and generous gesture.
