Published on June 21, 2020, a report by Daily Nation highlighted simmering boundary disputes between various counties in Kenya.
These disputes have the potential to cause serious conflicts unless resolved judiciously.
One such dispute is between Taita-Taveta and its neighbours Makueni and Kwale over the ownership of potentially revenue-spinning townships.
Some Taita-Taveta officials have attempted to set up revenue collection offices in Mtito-Andei and Mackinnon Road townships, drawing angry reactions from Makueni and Kwale, respectively.
Other counties, including Makueni, Kajiado, and Machakos, have been claiming ownership of the multibillion-shilling Konza technopolis.
Border clashes between Kakamega and Nandi have resulted in injuries, while Meru accuses Isiolo of encroachment on its land.
Residents of Kericho and Kisii have also been haggling over borders along the tea plantations.
Additionally, Kisii and Nyamira have both laid claim to Keroka.
These disputes are retrogressive, as the county boundaries were demarcated along the old district borders and enshrined in the 2010 Constitution.
County leaders who feel aggrieved should seek redress through the courts or the National Land Commission.
It is encouraging to note that Taita-Taveta has petitioned the Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee (IGRTC) to hear and resolve its border disputes with its neighbours.
