On June 20, 2020, a significant development took place in Kitui County as 38 MCAs signed a motion to impeach Governor Charity Ngilu.
The motion, moved by Majority Leader Peter Mwikya Kilonzo, represents Athi Ward and is set to be debated next week.
The MCAs are seeking to remove Governor Ngilu on grounds of abuse of office and the misappropriation of public funds.
Ngilu is accused of ignoring county assembly orders, including refusing to sack county Trade minister Phillip Mumo, who allegedly used fake academic papers to secure the job.
The MCAs also allege that Ngilu ignored summons to appear before the Senate committee investigating misuse of funds by county governments.
Furthermore, they claim that Ngilu is to blame for the deteriorating health services in the county, citing that hospitals lack drugs despite the assembly allocating enough funds for the same.
Ngilu's ouster motion comes barely two weeks after her Kirinyaga counterpart Anne Waiguru was impeached over alleged gross misconduct, abuse of office, and gross violation of the constitution.
