Exposing the Dark Side of the Internet

Published on June 20, 2020, by JOHN WALUBENGO

Two recent events have shed light on the darker aspects of the internet, leaving many to wonder about the true extent of online threats.

The Blue Whale online game, which has been linked to several teenage suicides, has sparked a heated debate about its role in these tragic events. While some argue that the game is the primary cause of the suicides, others believe that it may have simply provided an escape route for vulnerable teenagers.

Regardless of the game's culpability, the Kenyan government's response has been criticized for being ineffective. By declaring the game 'banned,' the government may have inadvertently created a sense of free publicity, encouraging more people to download the game.

A more constructive approach might have been to educate parents and teenagers about the game's risks and provide guidance on how to avoid or overcome its suicidal motives.

Teenage suicides are often linked to pre-existing challenges, such as absentee or busy parents, peer pressure, and lack of role models. Rather than focusing on banning games, we should invest in bringing up emotionally strong teens who can face the world's challenges without resorting to shortcuts like suicide.

Meanwhile, the WannaCry ransomware attack has highlighted the need for better cybersecurity measures. This attack, which has affected hospitals, universities, and public and private utilities, has demonstrated the devastating consequences of inadequate online protection.

Organizations must take responsibility for investing in their information infrastructure and designating a dedicated information security officer. By doing so, they can prevent similar attacks in the future and protect their data from falling into the wrong hands.

As we move forward, it is essential that we learn from these events and take concrete steps to address the dark side of the internet. By doing so, we can create a safer online environment for everyone.
