On June 20, 2020, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested five suspected robbers in Bungoma County, bringing an end to a series of high-profile robberies in the area.
The suspects are believed to have orchestrated a string of robberies, including one in which they shot and killed Stephen Gacheche, robbing him of Ksh 2 million.
According to the DCI, the suspects' hideout was discovered after detectives arrested 27-year-old John Wanyonyi, whose house contained several stolen electronics, a raincoat, military boots, and cash sale receipts of Sh62,000.
Wanyonyi then led officers to a hideout near a Shell petrol station, where four more suspects were arrested.
The suspects include 48-year-old John One Are and 35-year-old Milton Onyango (both Ugandans), Linet Adhiambo (26yrs), and 33-year-old Brian Ochieng.
DCI Boss George Kinoti stated on Twitter, "From their house more electronics including two TV sets, five mobile phones, two refrigerators, solar panel; assorted new clothes, beddings and mattresses (purchased between 9th and 13th June 2020 as per supermarket receipts); three metal bar cutters, riveting gun and handcuffs were recovered."
As Nairobi records a spike in petty crimes involving school students, the DCI's efforts are seen as a significant step in combating crime in the region.
