On June 18, 2020, tragedy struck in Kolondo village, Homa Bay County, when a 21-year-old woman, Cynthia Awuor, lost her life in a quarry where she was harvesting sand.

Aware of the struggles many face in making ends meet, Awuor had turned to sand harvesting as a means of survival, leaving behind three young children.

According to Assistant Chief Nelly Atata, Awuor was among a group of sand harvesters at the site when the top layer of the quarry suddenly collapsed, burying her under debris.

Despite the efforts of residents who rushed to her aid, Awuor succumbed to her injuries, dying on the spot.

The body was later taken to Rachuonyo South Sub-county Hospital mortuary, awaiting postmortem.
