On June 20, 2020, the Ministry of Youth and Gender Affairs disbursed Sh44.2 million as Covid-19 support funds for women and youth in informal settlements in Nairobi.

The funds include Sh33,450,000 from the Women Enterprise Fund (WEF) targeting women-owned businesses affected by the coronavirus pandemic in Mukuru kwa Njenga, Mathare, and Kibera.

Additionally, Sh9,755,000 from the Uwezo Fund targeting youth will provide opportunities for the youth as part of the ongoing 'Kazi Mtaani' project, which employs youth to offer social services in their neighborhoods.

The Kazi Mtaani labour-intensive public works programme aims to provide jobs for more than 26,000 Kenyans in informal settlements, with beneficiaries earning daily wages payable at least twice a week through mobile money transfers.

Gender CAS Rachel Shebesh announced that the ministry will also provide routine supplies of dignity packages, including sanitary towels and toiletries, for women in the slums.

The ministry will collaborate with charity and non-profit groups, as well as the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS), to address the social welfare needs of the people in Nairobi.
