On June 20, 2020, a planned meeting at the home of MP Malulu Injendi in Malava was abruptly ended when police officers lobbed teargas to disperse the crowd.
The meeting, which was attended by several leaders including Didmus Baraza, Hon Washiali, Hon Murunga, Hon Ferdinand Wanyonyi, and Hon Khalwale, was meant to address area leaders and residents.
Responding to the MP's query, one of the police officers stated, 'Another problem you are more than 15 people here, now we don’t want many people here.'
MP Benjamin Washiali, who was present at the meeting, blamed the police for throwing teargas at them, stating that they were only four Member of Parliament.
‘You are sending us away, What does the law stipulate? My brother even the way you are saying, even you my brother[Officer] you should respect your self so that we can also respect you,’ the MP asserted.
The police action was taken in line with government directives to curb the spread of coronavirus, which stipulate that gatherings of more than 15 people are not allowed.
