On June 20, 2020, the Baringo County Government launched a Sh. 60 million water drilling program, benefiting Kapropita Girls High School as its first recipient.
According to the school's deputy principal, Mrs. Mary Mwaita, the school has faced frequent water shortages due to reliance on the Kirandich water services, which implement water rationing programs.
“Due to water rationing, our girls are at times forced to get out of the school compound to fetch water in a nearby spring, posing insecurity and loss of time that would have been spent reading in class,” said Mrs. Mwaita.
Thanks to the county government's initiative, the school will now have a reliable source of water, allowing students to focus on their studies without interruptions.
Barongo County Executive Committee member for water and Irrigation, Enock Keston, stated that the borehole will improve water access by up to 20% in the county.
“Water shortage has been a serious problem in our county for a long period, and this equipment will improve access, which now stands at between 38% to about 50% of households in the county,” said Mr. Keston.
He added that the county had set a program to ensure each of the 30 wards gets two boreholes courtesy of the new equipment.
Mr. Keston also emphasized the sustainability aspect of the equipment, stating that his department had set aside funds for operation and maintenance and would hire staff to operate the equipment.
They were speaking at the school after the commissioning of the drilling drill by Governor Stanley Kiptis, his deputy Jacob Chepkwony, and Kapropita Ward Member of County Assembly Jeniffer Kabon.
