Published on June 20, 2020, the county's decision to purchase new vehicles is a significant shift from its initial plan to lease them. The move is aimed at addressing the challenges faced by county employees in discharging their duties.
According to Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchiu, the county could no longer afford the lease conditions imposed by car-hire firms. The firms demanded payments within a period of two years, which did not align with the county's projections.
"Two years didn't work well with our projections," Ntuchiu said. The county inherited some of its vehicles from the defunct municipal council, and many of them are old and require high maintenance costs. Repair costs range from Sh600,000 to Sh1 million a year, making it difficult for the county to maintain them.
The county plans to use Sh40 million from its 2020-2021 budget to buy new vehicles. In the first phase, the executives and chief officers will get Subaru four-wheel drive models. The assembly also plans to buy new vehicles for its leaders, including the speaker.
