Kisumu Police Chief Apologizes Over Hurried Burial of Ohangla Musician Abenny Jachiga

On June 12, 2020, the burial of Ohangla musician Bernard Obonyo, popularly known as Abenny Jachiga, was marred by clashes between police and mourners in Kisumu County.

Senior police officers, led by Kisumu Central Police Division Chief Simon Katam, visited the musician's family on June 19, 2020, to offer their condolences and apologize for their actions during the burial.

Police had ordered the burial at 1:51 am, sparking outrage among the musician's fans.

"We found it right to visit this family after the tragedy that befallen them following the demise of this musician," Katam said.

He was representing Kisumu County Police Commander Ranson Lolmodoni in the company of other senior police officers from Kisumu East.

Kisumu East Police Commanding Division Musa Musyimi apologized to the family, saying the intention of the police officers was to ensure the safety of the mourners considering the COVID-19 pandemic.

"There are things that happened during the burial and for that went wrong I apologize on behalf of police officers," he said.
