On June 20, 2020, reports emerged of a potential plot by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his handshake partner Raila Odinga to undermine Deputy President William Ruto's chances in the 2022 presidential election.

According to reports by the Standard newspaper, the President and the Opposition Chief are working on a pre-election deal that could challenge the Deputy President's bid for the presidency.

The deal, which is said to be in the works, is reportedly being led by a legal team led by Siaya Senator James Orengo, who are tasked with drafting a framework and paperwork before the deal is concluded.

ODM Chairman John Mbadi has backed the impending coalition, stating that it will be an alliance of Jubilee, ODM, and other political parties to strengthen the election cause and champion policies ahead of the polls.

“It is no secret that there will be a new outfit. It will be an alliance of Jubilee, ODM and other political players to strengthen the election cause and champion policies of the parties ahead of the polls,” Mbadi stated.

Jubilee Party Secretary General Raphael Tuju also confirmed that the alliance will start with a cooperation deal before joining hands with other political players to prepare for the 2022 general election.

“Any coalition agreement always starts with cooperation…going forward, we will engage the various political players to rally for the next polls,” Tuju stated.

The move comes after the DP and his team stirred a new battle with the Head of State in the battle for the ruling Jubilee Party control after unveiling a parallel office named Jubilee Asili Centre.
