On June 20, 2020, Chief Justice David Maraga suspended all Mombasa open court activities after 11 staff members tested positive for COVID-19.

The affected staff members were part of the 117 cases announced by Health CAS Rashid Aman on Friday, and their primary contacts within the courts, totaling 118 officers, were identified and ordered to self-quarantine.

According to Maraga, the affected courts include the Main Court Building, the City Court, and the Tononoka Children's Court.

Maraga noted that in view of these developments, all open court activities in Mombasa would be suspended until further notice, but the Judiciary would endeavour to offer online and other virtual services to court users.

The suspension comes barely a week after the courts were reopened following a closure on March 24, 2020, when the Judiciary directed all staff to work from home to reduce the risk of contracting coronavirus.
