On June 19, 2020, a fugitive Iranian judge, Gholamreza Mansouri, was found dead in a hotel room in Bucharest, Romania, after a fall from the window.

Mansouri, a co-defendant in a major financial corruption trial, had fled Iran with a half-million euros allegedly obtained through bribery.

The Iranian authorities had issued an alert for Mansouri's arrest through Interpol and had requested his extradition to face trial.

Reporters Without Borders, a press advocacy group, had also filed a legal complaint in courts in Germany and Romania requesting Mansouri's arrest on charges of crimes against humanity.

Mansouri was known for his harsh sentences against journalists, sending at least 20 to jail and solitary confinement.

Iran's chief of international policing, Hadi Shirzad, said that according to information Iran had received from Interpol, Mansouri had jumped out of the hotel window to his death.

The Iranian authorities have asked Romanian authorities to provide an official statement explaining the circumstances of Mansouri's death.
