President Uhuru Kenyatta has nominated Nancy Gathungu for the Auditor General position, a seat that fell vacant in August 2019 after Edward Ouko's eight-year tenure expired.
According to State House spokesperson Kanze Dena-Mararo, Gathungu was the first among the top three candidates presented to the president for nomination by the recruitment panel.
Parliament is set to vet Gathungu, who is an insider at the National Audit Office, following the president's forwarding of her name to National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi for onward communication to the House.
The position was advertised afresh after 17 shortlisted candidates failed to reach the threshold for the final shortlist in December last year.
Public Service Commission Chairperson Stephen Kirogo said the position was re-advertised to ensure competitiveness.
As the Auditor General, Gathungu will succeed Ouko in tackling a number of pending audit queries, some stretching back to 2014, including the multi-billion Eurobond.
She was the director quality assurance under Ouko and acted as the Auditor General's personal assistant between 2011 and 2015.
Parliament relies on the audited reports to hold public officers to account and allocate resources to the two levels of government.
