On June 20, 2020, Morris Murangiri, a Kenyan man, was arraigned in court for allegedly stealing Sh800,000 that was mistakenly deposited to his bank account.
The money was supposed to be deposited into John Munene Njeru's account but was mistakenly put in Murangiri's account by a man who bought a parcel of land from Njeru.
Without verifying the deposit, Murangiri withdrew the cash on diverse dates between December 5, 2019, and January 2, 2020, before the complainant discovered the mistake.
He used the money to build a house, but was later traced and arrested.
Murangiri pleaded guilty to committing the offense and applied to repay the amount in installments from his salary, but the court dismissed the application.
He was freed on a bond of Sh200,000 and surety of a similar amount, with the court to make a ruling on the matter on June 22, 2020.
