Published on June 20, 2020, the Mombasa open court activities have been suspended following the confirmation of 11 coronavirus cases among Judiciary staff. The affected staff members are part of the 117 cases announced by Health CAS Rashid Aman on Friday.
Chief Justice David Maraga has directed that the 11 affected staff members, along with their 118 primary contacts, go into self-quarantine immediately. The Ministry of Health officials have directed this measure to prevent further spread of the virus.
The suspension of court activities in Mombasa comes just a week after they were reopened following a closure on March 24 this year. The Judiciary had initially directed all staff to work from home to reduce the risk of contracting coronavirus.
However, four months later, the courts were reopened with the Judiciary promising to adhere to the Ministry of Health COVID-19 protocols. The protocols include limiting the number of people physically accessing the courts at any given time to promote social distancing.
Online and other virtual services will be available to court users where possible, according to Chief Justice David Maraga. The affected courts include the Main Court Building, the City Court, and the Tononoka Children’s Court.
