As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread in Kenya, the government has issued a stern warning to young people hosting house parties in certain areas of Nairobi.
According to Health CAS Rashid Aman, the spread of the virus is concentrated in some areas, including Westlands, Lavington, Kileleshwa, and Hurlingham, where groups of young people are organizing house parties.
On March 13, 2020, the government suspended all public gatherings after the first case of COVID-19 was reported in Kenya, and Kenyans were urged to stay home and wear masks if they needed to leave the house, while maintaining a distance of at least 1 meter in public places.
However, Dr. Aman expressed concern that young people have thrown caution to the wind and are hosting parties with little regard for the social distancing measures.
“…the avoidance of social gatherings is among the containment measures of coronavirus disease. I therefore want to appeal to our people to take individual responsibility in observing measures that have been advocated by the Ministry, failure to which the disease will be difficult to contain,” Dr. Aman said on Friday.
As of the current date, Kenya has reported a total of 4,374 cases of coronavirus, 119 deaths from the disease, and 1,550 recoveries.
