As of January this year, Nairobi has recorded over 100 cases of defilement, with numbers fluctuating throughout the month.

According to data collected in the region, there were 11 cases of rape in January, compared to seven in February, five in March, five in April, and seven in May.

Similarly, murder incidents stood at five in January, compared to 18 in February, 10 in March, 15 in April, and 16 in May, while assault cases stood at 137 in January, 151 in February, 28 in March, 15 in April, and 16 in May.

Robbery with violence cases also decreased, with 54 cases in January, compared to 21 in February, 25 in March, 20 in April, and 20 in May.

Despite the dusk to dawn curfew in place to combat the spread of the coronavirus, most incidents are believed to have occurred at night.

Nairobi police boss Philip Ndolo attributed the decrease in cases to enhanced police operations and action taken against those reported to the authorities.

He encouraged those offended to report incidents to the authorities for help and action, stating that failure to report incidents encourages crime to continue.

On cases of alleged brutality by police on the public, Ndolo said action had been taken against those accused.

Meanwhile, over 200 police officers have been moved in changes announced by the Inspector General of police, with at least 30 of them being traffic personnel based at the Kilimani police division.
