Kenya's Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Raychelle Omamo, has outlined the country's priorities for its two-year term on the UN Security Council, which began in June 2020.

Omamo emphasized that Kenya will focus on issues affecting Africa, including the conflicts in Somalia, Darfur, and the Central African Republic, as well as the Sahel region.

Kenya won a seat on the council after defeating Djibouti in a vote, securing 129 votes to Djibouti's 62.

The country has a ten-point agenda, which includes fighting terrorism, promoting justice and human rights, and supporting sustainable development.

Experts say Kenya has a good chance to push for UN reforms from within the council, including expanding the number of permanent members to include at least one from Africa.

Dr. Cliff Mboya, a China-Africa relations expert, urged Kenya to be 'brave and articulate African voices robustly' and not allow great power rivalry to undermine the common interests of African states.
