On June 19, 2020, Chief Justice David Maraga suspended all Mombasa open court activities after 11 staff members tested positive for COVID-19.

According to a statement by Maraga, the cases were reported in the past 24 hours, affecting Judiciary officers and registry staff. A total of 118 officers who were in close contact with the affected staff have been identified and ordered to self-quarantine.

The affected courts include the Main Court Building, the City Court, and the Tononoka Children's Court. However, online and virtual services will continue where possible.

Just a week ago, the Judiciary had announced the reopening of courts while adhering to the Ministry of Health COVID-19 protocols. To control crowds, courts were directed to allocate staggered hearing schedules, and parties were advised to note their allocated time and keep the schedule.

Health CAS Rashid Aman reported that 117 people tested positive from 3,043 samples tested, bringing the total number of cases to 4,374 and the number of samples tested to 433,541. Mombasa recorded 22 cases from various sub-counties.
