On June 19, 2020, Chief Justice David Maraga suspended all Mombasa open court activities following the COVID-19 outbreak.

The decision was made after 11 staff members tested positive for the virus, with 118 primary contacts identified and ordered to self-quarantine.

According to the Chief Justice, the affected courts are the Main Court Building, the City Court, and the Tononoka Children's Court.

Despite the suspension, online and other virtual services will be available to court users where possible.

The move comes just a week after the courts were reopened following a closure in March 2020, when the Judiciary directed all staff to work from home to reduce the risk of contracting the virus.

However, four months later, the courts were reopened with the Judiciary promising to adhere to the Ministry of Health COVID-19 protocols.
