Published on June 19, 2020, the impeachment of Governor Anne Waiguru by the Kirinyaga County Assembly sparked a heated debate about gender.

Public Service and Gender CS Margaret Kobia initially suggested that the governor was being targeted because of her gender, but the debate quickly escalated into online forums and spats amongst politicians.

However, some argue that the gender card is being played unfairly, as countless male politicians have gotten away with similar sins without facing the same consequences.

Playing the gender card in this instance is an attempt to deflect from the problem at hand, rather than addressing the actual issue of corruption.

Before accusing others of sexism, it's essential to slow down and look at the facts, shaking off assumptions based on gender.

Issues are not always about the sex-divide, and it's time to move beyond the 'women are their own worst enemy' claim and focus on the qualifications and abilities of individuals, regardless of their gender.
