Published on June 19, 2020, a meeting between security teams from Nandi and Kakamega counties revealed that politicians from both sides were fuelling simmering tension along the border of the two devolved units.
Commissioners Sam Kona and Philip Okundi met with the county security team in Kakamega, led by county commissioner Pauline Dola, to discuss the recent confrontations between the Kalenjin and Luhya communities.
The disputes were reportedly instigated by incitements from politicians and disagreements over land titles. Commissioner Kona stated that the commission would not spare anyone found inciting the communities, regardless of their position.
One person was shot dead by police during the incident, while five others sustained injuries at Tabolwa-Kanin village.
Commissioner Okundi vowed to summon politicians, interrogate, and expose them, stating that the commission had the authority to summon them and take action against them.
Security teams from both counties had previously warned leaders from both sides over incitements, stating that those responsible would face consequences.
