As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread in Kenya, the Ministry of Health has sounded a warning against house parties in Nairobi.

Speaking during a government briefing on June 19, 2020, Health Chief Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman expressed concern over the trend of residents in some neighborhoods holding house parties, which he said was complicating the war on the pandemic.

"We are aware in certain parts of the city, such as Westlands, Lavington, Kileleshwa and Hurlingham, we are seeing increasing numbers of young people congregating in groups and organising gatherings such as house parties," Aman said.

He cautioned that this behavior was a recipe for disaster and could lead to an increase in COVID-19 cases in these areas.

Acting Director General Patrick Amoth also weighed in, noting that the resumption of sporting activities in Europe could be contributing to the rise in house parties, as soccer fans gather to watch matches.

"We know now the premier league has resumed, though in empty stadiums. We urge soccer fans to exercise containment measures such as wearing masks and maintaining physical distance," Amoth said.
