On June 18, 2020, Gor Mahia secured a Sh55 million sponsorship deal with betting firm Betsafe, a day after announcing a similar deal with archrivals AFC Leopards worth Sh40 million.

The Tanzanian duo of custodian David Mapigano and winger Dickson Ambudo, along with Ugandan import Juma Balinya, had threatened to leave the club due to unpaid salaries.

However, following the new sponsorship deal, the trio has made a U-turn, promising to continue playing for the 18-time Kenya Premier League champions.

According to Balinya, who joined Gor Mahia in January 2020, the new deal will enable the club to overcome its financial struggles, allowing him to focus on helping the team win continental accolades.

"It is fantastic news for the club, the fans, and more especially to the players who have been the victims of the tough financial situation. There is no leaving because the situation will be better now," Balinya told Nairobi News from Kampala.

Mapigano, who has been with Gor Mahia since July 2018, expressed similar sentiments, stating that the new sponsorship deal will bring an end to the nine months of suffering the players have endured.
