On June 17, 2020, Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings and his philanthropist wife, Patty Quillin, made a historic donation of $120 million to support full-ride scholarships for students at historically black US colleges.

The generous gift was made to Spelman College and Morehouse College in Atlanta, as well as the United Negro College Fund, with the aim of providing 200 students with a full four-year college education.

According to Quillin and Hastings, "Both of us had the privilege of a great education and we want to help more students -- in particular students of color -- get the same start in life."

They added, "Historically black colleges and universities have a tremendous record, yet are disadvantaged when it comes to giving."

The donation is the largest-ever contribution by an individual in support of such scholarships, and is set to be spent over the coming decade.

Quillin and Hastings hope that the scholarships will help "reverse generations of inequity in our country."
