Tight Shoes, Hormones, and Other Causes of Smelly Feet

Smelly feet, or bromodosis, is a common problem affecting both men and women across different ages. According to clinical dermatologist Lucas Okumu, the condition has various causes depending on the individual.

Published on June 19, 2020, Okumu explained that some people's secretions or perspirations cannot find space to evaporate, causing bacteria to react with sweat and produce isovaleric acid, which causes the smell.

He noted that the problem can also be caused by a fungal infection known as athletes foot, which affects the area between the toes, causing the odour. Additionally, individuals with hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) may also experience the same problem.

Okumu attributed the problem to hormonal changes, stating that some people naturally secrete lots of hormones in their bodies, leading to excessive sweating, particularly on the feet. This, in turn, causes bacteria to build up on the feet, resulting in a bad smell.

He further explained that teenagers are also prone to the condition due to hormonal changes and high metabolic rates, which can trigger the body to produce a lot of sweat on the lower limbs, especially between the toes.

Okumu emphasized the importance of feet hygiene in overcoming the condition, advising individuals to wash their feet every day and dry them with a dry clean towel. He also recommended wearing the right pair of socks that can absorb sweat and leave the feet dry.

Furthermore, Okumu suggested that individuals with hyperhidrosis should walk barefoot when possible, especially indoors and overnight, or use open shoes. He also recommended applying an anti-fungal powder in shoes to prevent the activity of micro-organisms.

According to Okumu, visiting a dermatologist or medical expert is essential in case basic hygiene measures do not yield results, as they can provide the right prescriptions to solve the problem.
