On June 19, 2020, Ugandan activist Stella Nyanzi shared a shocking story about her former husband in an interview.
According to Nyanzi, she had been married to her husband, Osman, for several years and had three children with him. However, during a conversation, Osman revealed to Nyanzi that he was gay.
'So I leave Uganda and head to the Gambia where I fall in love with this man (called) Osnam,' Nyanzi narrated. 'I married him in a Muslim mosque (even though I am a Christian). I loved Osman so much. He is still my best friend. I saw our union as a merging of East and West Africa.'
However, things took a dramatic turn when Osman told Nyanzi that he was not coming to join her in Africa and instead would be applying for asylum in the UK as a gay man.
'When I get to Uganda he tells me he is not coming to join me in Africa. He reveals he will be applying for asylum to leave in the UK as a gay. I was like 'what'?' Nyanzi recalled.
Since then, Nyanzi has had to raise their children on her own.
