Dr. Fernando Wangila, a leading figure in Kenya's digital transformation, has passed away. He was the ICT Director for the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and played a crucial role in the agency's digital transformation.
Dr. Wangila was a passionate advocate for transparency and efficiency in government systems. He believed in the power of technology to drive positive change and was particularly interested in the use of blockchain for transparent systems.
As the Senior Deputy Director of NTSA's ICT and innovation department, Dr. Wangila was responsible for developing 5-year technical strategies for the country's transport sector. He was also instrumental in the development of the Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS), a database that stores centralized road transport data available to the public.
Dr. Wangila's efforts to digitize Kenya's transport industry earned him recognition as East Africa's CIO of the Year in 2017. He was also involved in the deployment of smart driver's licenses, aimed at reducing fraud.
