On June 19, 2020, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced the recruitment of 500 teachers in Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, and Lamu counties to address the teacher crisis in the region.

The recruitment drive aims to fill the gap left by teachers who fled the region due to insecurity, particularly in the wake of a terrorist attack at Kamuthe Resource Center in Garissa in 2020, which left three tutors dead.

According to a letter by TSC chief executive Nancy Macharia, the 500 positions include 191 posts for primary schools and another 309 for secondary schools.

Qualified candidates will be recruited on a three-year renewable contract, with interested candidates advised to make their applications online through the TSC website before June 30, 2020.

The government has indicated that schools within the country could reopen in September once all the Covid-19 control measures are put in place.
