On June 19, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta nominated Nancy Janet Kabui Gathungu as the new Auditor General, awaiting approval by Parliament.
According to a statement by Spokesperson Kanze Dena, Ms Gathungu was the top choice among the three candidates presented to the President for nomination by the Recruitment Panel for the Selection of the Auditor General.
Ms Gathungu will serve an 8-year term upon approval, filling the vacant office that has been without a head since August 2019, when Edward Ouko retired after his 8-year term expired.
