President Uhuru Kenyatta has nominated Nancy Janet Kabui Gathungu as the Auditor General, pending the National Assembly's vetting and approval. This nomination comes after a rigorous recruitment process that saw ten candidates shortlisted, including Leonard Lari, Edwin Kamar, and Benson Okundi.
Ms. Gathungu will serve a non-renewable 8-year tenure if parliament approves her appointment. Her predecessor, Edward Ouko, retired in August 2019, leaving a significant backlog of audited accounts for the national and county governments.
As the new Auditor General, Gathungu will face the daunting task of auditing backdated accounts, as well as reviewing the financial reports of state-owned enterprises such as Kenya Power, KenGen, and East African Portland Cement.
Her appointment comes at a time when state corporations have been delaying the release of their audited financial reports, awaiting the Auditor General's approval. This has led to companies such as Kenya Re seeking extensions to hold their Annual General Meetings.
Ms. Gathungu's nomination has been met with interest, and her approval by the National Assembly will be closely watched.
