On June 18, 2020, Kenya made history by being elected to the U.N. Security Council, defeating Djibouti in a second-round vote after an initial ballot failed to produce a clear winner.

Kenya, along with Mexico, India, Ireland, and Norway, will take up their two-year terms on the 15-member council on January 1, 2021. Mexico and India were elected unopposed, while Ireland and Norway beat Canada in the election.

The U.N. Security Council is the only body that can make legally binding decisions, such as imposing sanctions and authorizing the use of force. The council has five permanent veto-wielding members: the United States, Britain, France, China, and Russia.

Kenya's election to the U.N. Security Council is a significant milestone for the country, marking its first time on the council since 1994.
