Published on June 19, 2020, Kenya secured a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council in a closely contested vote.
The election, which took place on Thursday, was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the U.N. General Assembly observing strict coronavirus protocols, including face coverings, social distancing, and staggered voting.
Kenya won the seat with 129 votes, just one more than the required two-thirds majority, while Djibouti fell short with 62 votes.
India, Ireland, Mexico, and Norway also won their bids for non-permanent seats in the first round of voting on Wednesday, with Mexico and India running unopposed.
The five winners will join the council on January 1, 2021, for a 2-year term, replacing exiting members Belgium, Dominican Republic, Germany, Indonesia, and South Africa.
