Published on June 19, 2020, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has cast doubt on the future of Brazilian defender David Luiz at the club following their 3-0 Premier League defeat at Manchester City.
Luiz was sent off in the loss and is suspended for Arsenal's upcoming matches against Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton.
His contract expires on June 30, and Arteta acknowledged that the financial implications of the novel coronavirus may result in Arsenal letting Luiz go.
“We cannot forget the financial situation and the way COVID-19 has hit every club and the economy,” Arteta said. “We have to make big decisions.”
Arteta also downplayed the impact of playing in an empty stadium against City, saying it would not be a significant factor when Arsenal visit Brighton, who will be resuming their campaign after the pandemic halted the Premier League in mid-March.
