On June 19, 2020, the government's Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) marked a significant milestone as the first 228 Kenyans who signed up for the programme were set to occupy their new homes in Ngara.
The houses, constructed by China State Construction Engineering, are situated along Park Road, Ngara, and are part of the 1,370 currently under construction on the 7.9-acre site formerly owned by the government.
According to Charles Hinga, the Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary, the allocation of the houses will be done according to the Constitution, based on gender equity and diversity.
Applicants must be Kenyan citizens with a proven ability to purchase the houses through a transparent and accountable manner. The information on the planned sale, which will also consider marginalized and vulnerable groups, is available on online portals bomayangu.go.ke and housingandurban.go.ke.
Registration for affordable houses can also be done on these portals. Upon successful application and qualification, applicants will then have to wait for the ballot-based system of allocation to know if they get a unit.
The houses are available in three different types of units: one-bedroomed units worth Sh. 1 million, two-bedroomed units worth Sh. 2 million, and three-bedroomed units worth Sh. 3 million. Successful applicants who are unable to settle the purchase price on the spot will have to pay a 10 percent deposit with the rest paid over the next 25 years under a rent-to-own arrangement.
