On June 19, 2020, Kenya made history by securing a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. The country garnered 129 votes against Djibouti's 62 in the second round of voting.
President Uhuru Kenyatta welcomed the victory, terming it a demonstration of Kenya's growing profile and influence in the international community. He thanked Djibouti for being a worthwhile opponent and the African Union for endorsing Kenya as the continent's flag bearer in the contest.
Kenya's President expressed his commitment to consolidating and voicing Africa's position in the Security Council, as well as advancing its 10-point agenda outlined during the campaign period. The announcement was made by the President of the UN General Assembly, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, after the voting exercise that took close to three hours.
