Kenya's perseverance paid off as the country secured a seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in New York, USA, just a day after narrowly missing out on the first round of voting.
On June 17, 2020, Kenya garnered 113 votes, narrowly edging out Djibouti's 78 votes, prompting a runoff election.
After a second round of voting on June 18, 2020, Kenya secured the necessary support from 128 countries and was declared the winner with 129 votes, while Djibouti received 62 votes.
Kenya's victory is a temporary one, as the country will hold the seat for a non-permanent two-year term, set to expire in 2022.
