Kenya's bid for a seat at the United Nations Security Council has finally come to fruition, securing the coveted position on June 18, 2020, with a total of 129 votes.
Although Kenya initially led the pack in the first round of voting on June 17, 2020, with 113 votes, it fell short of the required threshold to claim the seat outright. Djibouti, its closest competitor, managed to secure 78 votes in the first round.
With neither Kenya nor Djibouti meeting the two-thirds majority required to win in the initial round, the voting process moved into a second round. In the end, Kenya's efforts paid off, securing the seat with a significant margin.
Kenya will officially assume its new role at the UN Security Council effective January 2021.
