On June 18, 2020, Kenya secured a coveted seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in a closely contested election.

The East African nation's victory came after a second round of voting at the UN headquarters in New York, where it received 129 votes.

Kenya's win was the result of a second round of voting, necessitated by the fact that neither contender secured the required two-thirds majority (128 votes) of the 193 member states in the initial round held on June 17.

Kenya had initially secured 113 votes, while Djibouti trailed behind with 78 votes in the first round.

However, Djibouti made a late surge in the second round, securing 62 votes.

Kenya's victory marks a significant achievement for the East African nation, which will now serve on the UNSC for the 2021/2022 term.
