On June 18, 2020, UEFA proposed a harmonized European transfer window closing on October 5, ahead of the Champions League and Europa League group stages.

Following an executive committee meeting via videoconference, UEFA announced that clubs would have until October 6 to register players for the group stage of next season's European club competitions.

UEFA's proposal comes as the 2020-21 Champions League is set to start on October 20, with the Europa League group stage beginning two days later.

Typically, the European summer transfer window closes in early September, but individual countries have varying dates.

Football is still adapting to the coronavirus pandemic, which interrupted the current season in mid-March.

FIFA has allowed countries to open their transfer windows up to four weeks before the delayed season's completion, with new signings not eligible until next season.

Several countries are resuming competitions, with the English Premier League and Spain's La Liga not set to finish until late July, and Italy's Serie A not finishing until early August.
