On June 18, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta addressed concerns about his potential extension of the presidential term, stating that he would not seek to remain in power beyond 2022.

During a virtual meeting with the Atlantic Council, Uhuru Kenyatta clarified his stance on the matter, emphasizing that he would adhere to the constitution's two-term limit.

He dismissed claims made by Jubilee Party vice-chairman David Murathe in December 2019, who had suggested that Uhuru Kenyatta might remain in power under a new political dispensation.

Uhuru Kenyatta explained that Kenyans were more concerned with the value of their vote, distribution of resources, and inclusivity in government, which the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) aimed to address.

He emphasized that the two-term limit was a clear and established principle in Kenyan politics, dating back to 1992 when multipartism was introduced.

Uhuru Kenyatta's statement came as a response to speculation surrounding the BBI proposals and their potential impact on the 2022 presidential elections.
