June 18, 2020 - The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a devastating toll on Othaya Sub-county in Nyeri County, with thousands of vulnerable residents struggling to access basic necessities.
Deputy County Commissioner Henry Ochako attributed the rising cases of hunger to the numerous people who have been rendered jobless since the outbreak of COVID-19 and the containment measures instituted to curb the spread of the disease.
Speaking during the distribution of foodstuff by well-wishers and Othaya MP Gichuki Mugambi, Ochako appealed for more aid to the affected families, stating that the government is putting efforts to donate foodstuff to the affected families.
He added that the government is providing 1,567 vulnerable residents with Sh 1,000 each on a weekly basis to cater for their basic needs, although he acknowledged that the amount is not sufficient.
Area legislator Gichuki Mugambi also urged residents to continue adhering to government directives to contain the spread of Coronavirus, stating that the food donated would benefit about 2,000 residents.
He thanked the government for extending the curfew hours, which now enables tea farmers to fend for themselves, and called on other well-wishers to help the vulnerable people and make their lives more bearable.
